Climate-smart living

§

In Sweden, residential living causes almost 1/3 of the negative footprint on the environment. Some of the key elements are heating, warm water and electricity for washing as well as for preparing and storing food. By choosing a new built BoKlok dwelling, with a modern heating system and A-level energy class white goods, you make a green contribution. But there are further possibilities for sustainable, climate-smart living; actions that both lower your living costs and reduce your environmental footprint. BoKlok have five climate-smart statements that will guide you.

  • Indoors is better than outdoors

We build our homes indoors in efficient and modern factories. In combination with our large volumes, this means that we can save on material used and on transportation. This gives lower housing costs and climate-smart living at the same time!
Here are some benefits of factory based manufacturing:

-Increased optimisation of used material, which minimises waste.

    -Recycling of all waste.

-Less packaging material as we purchase all good in large quantities.

-Good control of the moist level of the wood, which eliminates the need for drying at the work site, and thereby do away with that extra, unnecessary time and energy waste.

    -It does not rain indoors.

  • Small is better than large

The most sustainable energy is the energy never spent. That is why our square meters contain a lot more living than in other houses. Those unnecessary show-off square meters that we never build, do not spend any energy at all.

    For example:

-An average 2 bedroom apartment in Sweden is 78 sq.m. A BoKlok apartment contains all the same functionality in 69 sq.m. This saves 1 000 kwh per year in heating.

-The average terraced house in Sweden is a house built in 1982, is 107 sq.m. large and consume 16 000 kWh/year. The BoKlok Terraced house is also 107 sq.m, but with its more efficient energy solutions it only consumes 10 500 kWh/year. This saves you 30% in heating costs.

  • New is better than old

In the choice between new built and old houses, a new BoKlok dwelling is far better. New built houses have better energy performance, modern heating systems and efficient white goods.

-We use heat exchanging systems in our houses, thus extracting the energy from the ventilated air.

-Our heat systems are prepared to be plugged into any modern and sustainable energy source; such as soil or bedrock heat pumps, gas, or solar.

-Our white goods are all of A-level energy class.

  • Good on sustainability, but not the best

More housing for your money is our motto. And we mean it. But not at any cost. We never compromise on quality, or on meeting energy and sustainability norms and regulations.

-In Sweden, both our apartments and our terraced houses perform better than the though Swedish energy regulations.

-In Germany we meet the KfW 70 norm.

  • Wood is sustainable

Wood is cost efficient, renewable and carbon neutral – actually it is the only climate neutral building material. The wood we use are from known, certified sources; harvested locally in Scandinavia or in Germany. Wood requires lot less energy in the building process comparing with concrete or bricks. And the forests prosper by being well managed and harvested wisely.

-Wood is carbon footprint neutral and has very good insulation qualities.

-The low weight of wood makes construction work and transportation a lot more efficient and sustainable.

-Wood can be recycled as energy, replacing other fossil fuels.

-Only 64% of the yearly forest growth in Europe is being harvested. The forest’s carbon storing capacity increases if the forests are being well managed and harvested. Young trees grow fast and absorb more carbon than old trees. Old trees, that are not being harvested, will eventually die and decay, and thereby evaporate carbon back into the atmosphere.

-Wood manufacturing create very little waste. Practically all bi-products can be used into other goods, such as chip boards, or recycled into energy.
